LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Joe Hune, R-Fowlerville, welcomed Livingston County Veteran of the Year Dwight Sachau to the Capitol on Thursday as his guest for the 23rd Annual Senate Memorial Day Service. The Service honors Michigan servicemen and servicewomen who have died within the past year.
“Memorial Day isn’t just a day off from work or a day to enjoy a cookout; it’s a solemn occasion for us to remember the brave men and women in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom,” Hune said. “It is a great privilege and honor to be a part of this special day in the Senate each year to pay tribute to those who lost their lives defending our nation.”
Following the session, Hune, Sen. Rebekah Warren, and Reps. Lana Theis, Hank Vaupel and Donna Lasinski hosted a luncheon honoring 77 veterans from Livingston and Washtenaw counties.
Veterans from World War II through military action in Afghanistan were present for the luncheon. During the luncheon, Hune, Theis and Vaupel paid tribute to the late Donald Burgett, who had several family members present.
